Moldova-bound train with radioactive cargo passes through Kazakh borders undetected

Abstract:

In September 2007, a train with radioactive cargo passed through Kazakhstani border checkpoints undetected. A press report indicated that the train, en route from Kazakhstan to Moldova, was detained at Russia’s Kartaly border checkpoint, just prior to transiting through Russian territory. The cargo of scrap metal reportedly emitted radiation of 4 microsievert/hr and reportedly contained bismuth-207 and technetium-99. The railcar with the radioactive cargo was sent back to Kazakhstan.{Entered 8/23/08 AL}
