Radiation sources discovered in Vladivostok port

Abstract:

On 19 June 2008, Vladivostok port’s Yantar radiation detection system alerted port officials to presence of a radiation source in a cargo container. Experts from the security company Primtekhnopolis, with officials from the Emergency Ministry and Rospotrebnazdor present at the scene, located the source, which turned out to be a lighting sign. A lighting element in the sign reportedly contained radium-266 salts. The object emitted radiation at a level of 47,500 microroentgen/hour or 475 microsievert/hour.

On 5 April 2008, radioactive goods were also found in a cargo container shipped from Chita to the Vladivostok port. The radiation level of the container, contents unknown, reportedly was measured at 130 microrentgen/hour. The container was unloaded and its contents were destroyed.[1]
