Radioactive cargo detained at the Ilyichevsk seaport in Ukraine
Abstract:
The Ukrainian Border Service seized a container that set off radiation detection devices at the Ilyichevsk trade seaport in Odessa oblast, Novyy Region news agency reported on 1 December 2008. According to the Border Service, the registered radiation level was 190-340 microroentgen/hr whereas the permissible level is 30 microroentgen/hr. The source of radiation was initially identified as contaminated welding equipment that was shipped onboard of Nedlloyd Barents (Netherlands) from Egypt. The contents of the container were taken to a special storage area for further examination. {Entered GM}
