Radiological Weapons: Belarusian Police Block Cesium-137 Sale Authorities have detained an unknown number of people in Belarus who attempted to sell two containers of cesium-137 to an undercover agent, officials said yesterday (see GSN, June 5, 2002; Associated Press/International Herald Tribune, Feb. 14). Russian Forces Block Chechen Rebels Meanwhile, Russian military forces deployed in Chechnya have taken all measures to prevent Chechen rebels from conducting radiological attacks, a senior Russian military officer said (see GSN, Feb. 3). “In the course of the counterterrorist operation in Chechnya, the Russian top brass took some serious measures to prevent militants from staging terrorist acts with the help of radioactive materials,” said Maj. Gen. Alevtin Yunak, head of the Ecological Security of the Russian armed forces (RIA Novosti/European Internet Network, Feb. 14).
