No Korean Nuclear Talks Scheduled Yet

Meetings of a multilateral working group on the North Korean nuclear crisis remain unscheduled, despite the earlier intention of all parties to convene the group this month, Yonhap news agency reported today (see GSN, March 10).

At six-nation talks in February, the United States, North Korea and Pyongyang’s neighbors agreed to a future round of high-level talks in June and to working group meetings this month.

Planning for that session is apparently at an impasse, according to Yonhap.

“We will make our best efforts to get the North Korean nuclear issue to a settlement phase through a third round of talks after holding one or two working group meeting during the second quarter of the year,” said South Korean Deputy Foreign Minister Lee Soo-hyuck (Yonhap/BBC, March 11).

Meanwhile, North Korea continued its rhetoric yesterday, threatening to “increase its nuclear deterrent” (Jane Macartney, Reuters, March 10).
