New Russian Government Will Not Harm Nuclear Industry, Rumyantsev Says

The breakup of Russia’s Atomic Energy Ministry will not harm the country’s nuclear industry, former Russian Atomic Energy Minister Alexander Rumyantsev said last week (see GSN, March 10).

Under the new structure of the Russian government, announced last week, all civilian nuclear activities would be transferred to the new Industry and Energy Ministry. The new ministry would also include the Federal Agency for Atomic Energy, to be headed by Rumyantsev. The Russian nuclear weapons complex would be transferred to the Defense Ministry.

Rumyantsev said the new government structure would not have a negative impact on Russia’s nuclear industry. “Nothing terrible threatens this branch,” he said (Nuclear.ru, March 11).
