N. Korea, Iran May Hope To Generate EMP, Report Says

North Korea and Iran may be looking to generate an “electromagnetic pulse” with a high-altitude nuclear explosion to disable U.S. computer systems, a congressional task force said Thursday (see GSN, July 15).

A nuclear explosion over the United States “has the potential to hold our society at risk and might result in defeat of our military forces,” the report states.

U.S. military forces depend on digital technology in their efforts to find and defeat the enemy, according to Reuters.

Russia and China “considered” using an electromagnetic pulse as part of a limited nuclear option, the report states.

“Rogue states, such as North Korea and Iran, may also be developing the capability to pose an EMP threat,” says the report to the House Armed Services Committee. “The U.S. must establish a global environment that will profoundly discourage such attacks,” it adds (Jim Wolf, Reuters/Yahoo!News, July 22).

Meanwhile, the United States and Japan agreed today to greater cooperation on preventing proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, with particular concern expressed over nuclear development in Iran and North Korea, Agence France-Presse reported.

Officials from the two countries reiterated the need for expert cooperation on North Korea during a semiannual arms-control meeting in Tokyo, a Japanese diplomat at the conference said (AFP, July 23).
