First Missile Interceptor Installed at Alaska Base

Technicians yesterday installed the first missile interceptor, part of the Ground-based Midcourse Defense system, at Fort Greely, Alaska, according to Associated Press (see GSN, July 14).

By the end of the year, five additional interceptors will be deployed at Fort Greely and four interceptors will be deployed at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, according to AP. Ten more interceptors are to be deployed at Fort Greely by the end of 2005.

“We’re coming to the end of an era where we have not been able to defend our country against long-range ballistic missile attacks,” said Maj. Gen. John Holly, head of the Missile Defense Agency’s ground-based missile defense program (Rachel D’Oro, AP/Yahoo!News, July 23).
