Umatilla Has Most Productive Month of CW Disposal

October was the most productive month at the Umatilla Chemical Agent Disposal Facility since the Oregon plant began weapons destruction in September 2004, the East Oregonian reported (see GSN, Sept. 28).

The incinerator destroyed 7,489 sarin-filled M55 rockets last month. The previous record was 5,473, said spokesman Adam Russell.

“I felt all along watching this organization that it was a diamond in the rough,” said facility manager Don Barclay. “We’re starting to see some polish.”

By the close of business Monday, 38,587 rockets had been destroyed, 42.2 percent of the sarin rockets stored at the Umatilla Chemical Depot. However, that is only 6 percent of the total stockpile, which includes weapons containing VX nerve agent and mustard gas, according to the East Oregonian (Hal McCune, East Oregonian, Nov. 2).
