Pentagon Certifies WMD Civil Support Teams

Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support Teams from the New Jersey and Indiana National Guard have been certified, the Defense Department announced Monday (see GSN, June 27).

The 21st WMD-CST, stationed at Fort Dix, N.J. and the 53rd WMD-CST, stationed at Indianapolis, Ind. are the first of the 12 teams authorized in the Defense Department Appropriations Act for fiscal 2004 to be certified, bringing the total number of certified teams to 34.

Congress has authorized 55 WMD-CSTs — at least one in every state, territory, and the District of Columbia.  The final 21 teams are expected be certified by next November, according to the Defense Department (U.S. Defense Department release, Nov. 28)
