Newport to Decontaminate VX Storage Tanks From Thursday, December 1, 2005 issue.

Newport to Decontaminate VX Storage Tanks

Decontamination of eight tanks once filled with VX nerve agent is scheduled to begin this week at the Newport Chemical Depot in Indiana, WTHI reported (see GSN, Nov. 21).

Workers will bisect the tanks and then use electrical resistance heating to decontaminate the remaining pieces.

The tanks are heated for seven hours to a temperature of 1,000 degrees to destroy any VX that remains inside. They are recycled once decontamination is complete.

Workers are expected to finish work on the tanks by spring 2006 (WTHI, Nov. 30).
