CW Expert with al-Qaeda Link Arrested in Spain

Spanish law enforcement authorities yesterday arrested a chemical weapons expert accused of recruiting members for al-Qaeda to fight in Iraq, Reuters reported (see GSN, Dec. 14).

The native of Belarus was one of 16 people arrested by Spanish police. The suspects have been accused of trying to send volunteers to Iraq “to wage jihad as members of the al-Qaeda network,” according to Spanish Interior Minister Jose Antonio Alonso.

The chemicals weapons expert was trained in Chechnya, according to the Interior Ministry (Reuters/Los Angeles Times, Dec. 20).
