China, U.S. Discuss Cooperation on WMD Proliferation

U.S. and Chinese officials finished two days of talks yesterday in Washington where they discussed cooperation on issues such as combating terrorism and WMD proliferation, Agence France-Presse reported today (see GSN, Nov. 28).

Deputy Secretary of State Robert Zoellick said officials from the two countries discussed “how China could work with the United States and others on challenges such as Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran and North Korea.”

“Without always pursuing the same policies, we can still pursue the same policy goals with complementary approaches,” Zoellick said.

The two sides could not, however, agree on how to resolve the dispute over Iran’s nuclear program if diplomacy fails, a State Department official said.

“Now, do we agree on every single aspect of how to implement policies to achieve these goals (on Iran)? Well, not surprisingly, no,” the official said.

“But I think it was notable that the goals were similar and that China wants to be seen as acting responsibly with regard to the important issue of nuclear proliferation,"” the official said (Agence France-Presse/Yahoo!News, Dec. 9)
