Leading EU States to Create Terrorism Alert System

Five leading European Union member nations yesterday announced plans to develop a network to share information on terrorist suspects and missing WMD materials, Agence France-Presse reported (see GSN, March 3).

“We are going to exchange information on persons linked to international terrorism and who are under reasonable suspicion ... for example, people who have attended jihadist training camps,” said Spanish Interior Minister Jose Antonio Alonso said as he and representatives from France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom concluded talks.

The alert system would cover missing explosives or nuclear, biological and chemical weapons, according to AFP. Terrorists acquired dynamite from an abandoned Spanish mine to carry out the Madrid train bombings last year, according to AFP (Agence France-Presse/Yahoo!News, March 15).
