Algeria Preparing to Sign Additional Protocol

Algeria remains intent on signing the Additional Protocol to its safeguards agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency, the head of the African nation’s atomic energy body said yesterday (see GSN, Jan. 30).

The protocol would allow the U.N. agency to carry out snap inspections of Algeria’s two nuclear reactors, located about 100 miles south of Algiers.

“Major work is under way” toward the signing, said Noureddine Bendjaballah, commissioner for Algeria’s Atomic Energy Commission. “We are in the preparatory phase.”

“We have instructions to move very quickly, but I can’t give a timetable,” he added (Jamey Keaten, Associated Press, March 21).
