Fire Breaks Out at Umatilla

Weapons incineration was stopped at the Umatilla Chemical Agent Disposal Facility in Oregon after a fire ignited on Saturday, the East Oregonian reported (see GSN, April 12).

The fire began at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the facility’s explosive containment room while an M-55 rocket that had been drained of sarin was being cut into pieces. The fire burned out after air was shut off to the room. There were no injuries or release of chemical agent outside the containment room, depot officials said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, the Oregonian reported. The fire appears similar to an April 7 blaze at the depot, said spokeswoman Mary Binder (East Oregonian, April 25).
