OPCW Inspectors Visit Anniston Depot

Inspectors from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons were in Alabama last week to examine chemical weapons storage at the Anniston Army Depot (see GSN, Oct. 29, 2004).

This was the agency’s 11th inspection at Anniston. Officials were verifying that the depot is maintaining accurate records of its chemical weapons stockpile, according to a press release from the U.S. Army Chemical Materials Agency.

“I am proud to report that the inspection concluded earlier than expected and that it was very successful,” Lt. Col. Darryl Briggs, Anniston Chemical Activity commander, said in the release.

The international agency is charged with verifying compliance with the Chemical Weapons Convention, the treaty that requires the United States, Russia and other nations to eliminate their chemical arsenals.

The chemical stockpile at Anniston consists of munitions and 1-ton containers filled with the nerve agents sarin and VX and mustard agents HD and HT (U.S. Army Chemical Materials Agency release, April 24).
