India Considers Bill Forbidding WMD Proliferation

Legislation against proliferation of weapons of mass destruction was introduced today in the Indian parliament, Agence France-Presse reported (see GSN, April 27).

Indian Defense Minister Pranab Mukherjee said the bill would “provide an integrated legislative basis to India’s commitment to prevent proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.”

“The provisions of the act apply to export, transfer, re-transfer, transit and trans-shipment of material, equipment or technology related to weapons of mass destruction,” Mukherjee said.

Both houses of parliament must approve the “The Weapons of Mass Destruction and Their Delivery Systems (Prevention of Unlawful Activities) Bill, 2005” for it to become law, AFP reported (Agence France-Presse/SpaceWar.com, May 10).
