CDC Expands Disease Information-Sharing Network

The size of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s information-sharing network has more than doubled since an expansion effort began six years ago, agency director Julie Gerberding said yesterday (see GSN, March 28).

“We have a moral imperative to take these steps because the survival of the world is in our hands,” Gerberding said of the Laboratory Response Network, which is intended to enable authorities to track and manage diseases spread by nature or terrorists.

More than 140 federal, state, environmental, veterinary, local and international laboratories are now able to share information, the Associated Press reported (Travis Reed, Associated Press/Macon Telegraph, May 9).
