NSA Backs Release of Transcripts Requested by Bolton

The U.S. National Security Agency is recommending the release of classified transcripts of 10 communications involving U.S. officials previously obtained by Undersecretary of State John Bolton, the White House nominee for U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, the Financial Times reported today (see GSN, May 3).

National Intelligence Director John Negroponte will decide whether to release the documents to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which is considering Bolton’s appointment. It was not immediately known if Negroponte would allow the committee to see the transcripts, the Times reported.

Committee Democrats hope to determine whether Bolton had reasonable cause for requesting transcripts of 10 conversations intercepted by the National Security Agency (Demetri Sevastopulo, Financial Times, May 4).
