Florida Port Installs Radiation Monitors

U.S. Customs and Border Protection has placed 10 radiation monitors at the Jacksonville, Fla., Port Authority to scan cargo for nuclear weapons and radiological “dirty bombs,” the Associated Press reported yesterday (see GSN, March 31).

Los Angeles, Newark, N.J., and Seattle are the only other ports in the country to have received the equipment, according to AP.

Detectors were placed in the terminals to scan trucks leaving the port after collecting cargo from ships, AP reported.

“It gives us another aspect of security. It takes care of a gap,” said Rick Ferrin, Port Authority executive director (Associated Press/Gainesville Sun, May 3).
