U.S. Army Unveils Missile-Detecting Radar

U.S. Army officers and contractors unveiled the sea-based X-band radar yesterday, the Associated Press reported (see GSN, June 7).

Mounted on a semi-submersible oil-drilling rig, the system is designed to detect incoming enemy missiles and to provide the information needed to launch U.S. interceptor missiles in response, according to AP.

The system has not been fully tested and has suffered launch failures of ground-based interceptor missiles, AP reported.

However, Army Col. Michael Smith, project manager of the radar, expressed optimism.

“For those of us in the business, we don’t have any doubts,” Smith said. “I’m positive it will work” (Associated Press/Plainview Daily Herald, June 8).
