Conservative Leader Wants to Reopen Debate on Canada’s Participation in U.S. Missile Defense

The leader of Canada’s Conservative Party said ahead of this month’s general election that he would reopen the debate over his country’s participation in the U.S. missile defense program, the Toronto Star reported today (see GSN, April 25, 2005).

Stephen Harper told Radio-Canada yesterday that if his party takes power he would support a free vote on the proposal in the House of Commons.

If the United States makes another offer on the program to Ottawa and “if we come to the conclusion that it’s in the country’s best interests, it’s my intention to turn this treaty over to Parliament for a free vote,” Harper said (Bruce Campion-Smith, Toronto Star, Jan. 13).
