Newport CW Depot Seeks More Storage Space for Waste

The U.S. Army has asked Indiana to modify a permit for the Newport Chemical Depot so that additional waste can be stored there, the Terre Haute Tribune-Star reported Tuesday (see GSN, Dec. 6, 2005).

The Army wants to put up a new building to store 1X hazardous waste, which includes employee protective equipment, spent activated carbon, laboratory waste, and trash and other parts that have been exposed to VX nerve agent and decontaminated, according to project manager Jeff Brubaker.

Brubaker said the storage building would be made of galvanized steel. The waste would be placed into 55-gallon drums and other storage containers, he added.

The waste is now stored in a wood-framed building that is expected to become full between April and June, according to Brubaker.

The additional storage facility would hold 1,088 55-gallon containers, or 59,840 gallons of waste, said Scott Rowden, environmental director for site contractor Parsons (Patricia Pastore, Tribune-Star, Jan. 17).
