U.S. Army to Destroy Mustard Munition in Delaware From Friday, January 6, 2006 issue.

U.S. Army to Destroy Mustard Munition in Delaware

The U.S. Army plans to destroy a recently found 75 mm mustard-gas munition in Delaware rather than ship it to Maryland for disposal, according to a press release issued yesterday (see GSN, Oct. 25, 2005).

The munition has been held at Dover Air Force base in Delaware since being found in October in a clamshell processing plant.

An open house had been set for Jan. 9 in Edgewood, Md., to discuss plans for moving the munition to the Aberdeen Proving Ground for destruction, the Army said. That meeting was canceled and the Army will instead destroy the munition in Delaware using the Explosive Destruction Systems of the Army Chemical Materials Agency Nonstockpile Chemical Materiel Project.

The Army during the process expects to gain information on the effects of sea water on chemical weapons and agents (U.S. Army press release, Jan. 5).
