India, U.S. to Hold Nuclear Talks From Monday, January 9, 2006 issue.

India, U.S. to Hold Nuclear Talks

India and the United States are expected to conduct the next round of high-level negotiations on the planned nuclear technology sharing deal this month in New Delhi, the Press Trust of India reported yesterday (see GSN, Dec. 7, 2005).

Indian Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran and U.S. Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns will meet in approximately two weeks, officials said yesterday.

Saran has provided the Bush administration with an outline on India’s plans to separate its civilian and military nuclear facilities as required under the proposed agreement.

“Now, the U.S. has to react and we are awaiting that,” a source said (Press Trust of India/India Daily, Jan. 8).

Meanwhile, Saran arrived in China yesterday for the second round of the India-China Strategic Dialogue, PTI reported.

Beijing remains opposed to recognizing India as a nuclear power and believes the Indo-U.S. nuclear deal might undermine nuclear disarmament trends (Anil Joseph, Press Trust of India, Jan. 9).

Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende is scheduled to make a three-day stop in India beginning Jan. 18, the Indo-Asian News Service reported Saturday.

New Delhi is attempting to win over members of the Nuclear Suppliers Group to the supporting India’s nuclear energy efforts with the United States and other nations. The Netherlands is a member of the group (Indo-Asian News Service/Times of India, Jan. 7).
