South Korea Stops Illicit Equipment Sales to North

South Korean authorities have thwarted two companies’ attempts to export illicit equipment to North Korea within the past year, a lawmaker in Seoul said yesterday (see GSN, Aug. 14).

Representative Kim Ki-hyon said that government records indicated that one South Korean firm signed a contract in August to supply Pyongyang with equipment that could be used to produce missile warheads.  Another company tried to sell centrifuge equipment in December.

The Commerce, Industry and Energy Ministry blocked both export attempts, Kim said (Yonhap News Agency, Oct. 1).
