Demolition Begins on Aberdeen CW Disposal Building

The U.S. Army yesterday began destroying the building at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland that was used to neutralize mustard agent stored in more than 1,800 bulk containers (see GSN, Sept. 13).

Demolition of the Aberdeen Chemical Agent Disposal Facility Process Neutralization Building followed a period of decontamination and testing for residual chemical vapor, the Army said in a press release.

The building is the last left standing at Aberdeen involved in actual disposal of chemical agent.

Demolition of “non-agent” buildings is more than 70 percent finished and is expected to be completed by next spring, the Army said (U.S. Army Chemical Materials Agency release, Oct. 30).
