Russia Clears Way for IAEA to Run Nuclear Fuel Site

Russia has moved toward placing its uranium enrichment facility at Angarsk under International Atomic Energy Agency control as part of a plan to create international nuclear fuel facilities, ITAR-Tass reported yesterday (see GSN, Sept. 29).

The goal of the initiative is to create a reliable supply of nuclear fuel to dissuade budding nuclear nations from building their own fuel production sites that could also produce nuclear weapon materials (see GSN, Sept. 19).

Russia is ready to remove Angarsk from its list of strategic sites that cannot be visited by foreigners, Russian Atomic Energy Agency head Sergei Kiriyenko told a Moscow conference yesterday.

“We place this facility under the control of the IAEA, as it is planned to organize an international center for uranium enrichment here,” he said (ITAR-Tass, Oct. 31)
