Montenegro Joins Test Ban Treaty From Friday, November 17, 2006 issue.

Montenegro Joins Test Ban Treaty

Montenegro joined the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, succeeding to the obligations it was under before formally declaring its independence last year from Serbia and Montenegro (see GSN¸ Nov. 7).

The nation became the 137th party to the treaty banning all nuclear weapons tests, leaving Moldova as the only East European nation that has not ratified the pact, according to a release this week from the treaty’s oversight body.

Forty-four specific nations are required to ratify the pact before it can enter into force.  Ten of those countries have yet to do so, according to the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO release, Nov. 13).
