Election Results Will Not Affect Passage of U.S-Indian Nuclear Deal, Indian Analyst Says

U.S. election results are not likely to upset India’s pending nuclear trade deal with the United States, an Indian analyst said today (see GSN, Nov. 2).

Lawmakers have shown strong bipartisan support for the deal, said C. Raja Mohan, foreign affairs editor of The Indian Express.  The plan pursued by the Bush administration calls for easing U.S. and international restrictions on nuclear trade to India in exchange for New Delhi opening its civilian nuclear industry to international monitoring.  The U.S. House has already passed legislation enabling the pact to move forward (see GSN, July 27).

Mohan assessed that the U.S. Senate would probably take up the matter during its lame duck session this year, and failing that, the new Congress is likely to approve the deal early next year (C. Raja Mohan, Indian Express, Nov. 8).
