North Korea Could Resume Missile Tests

North Korean negotiators told their Japanese counterparts at bilateral talks last week that Pyongyang might not continue its current moratorium on missile tests, United Press International reported Saturday (see GSN, March 3, 2005).

Japanese officials requested that North Korea maintain the freeze it began in 2002, but the North Korean side said it could resume tests if Tokyo continued to threaten Pyongyang, according to a Japanese official.

The officials held bilateral meetings in Beijing to discuss North Korea’s nuclear weapons program and its Cold War-era abductions of Japanese citizens. Tokyo has refused to normalize relations with North Korea until both issues are resolved (United Press International/Bahrain News Agency, Feb. 11).
