Leak at Newport Chemical Depot Originated from Drain

A leak of VX nerve agent wastewater that occurred earlier this week at the Newport Chemical Depot in Indiana originated from a drain in the bottom of a mixer-reactor, according to the commanding officer at the facility (see GSN, March 15).

U.S. Army Lt. Col. Scott Kimmell said in a press release that a plug on the reactor came loose as two workers at the Newport Chemical Agent Disposal Facility tried to tighten it. Around 300 gallons of the waste product escaped but was contained (U.S. Army Chemical Materials Agency release, March 15).
