Sarin Nerve Agent Processing Complete at Anniston From Friday, March 3, 2006 issue.

Sarin Nerve Agent Processing Complete at Anniston

The Anniston Chemical Agent Disposal Facility in Alabama yesterday finished incinerating all of the depot’s sarin-filled weapons (see GSN, Feb. 23).

Processing of the nerve agent began in August 2003. In total, 142,428 weapons were destroyed, according to a U.S. Army Chemical Materials Agency release.

“I am extremely proud of this command — stockpile and ANCDF. Everyone’s commitment to safety, coupled with their hard work, means we no longer need to worry about GB nerve agent and the potential risk those munitions once posed to this area,” Army Lt. Col. Darryl Briggs, Anniston Chemical Activity commander, said in the release.

In total, 42,762 M55 rockets and warheads; 16,026 8-inch projectiles; 74,040 105 mm projectiles; and 9,600 155 mm projectiles were destroyed, along with two ton containers and 36 vials of sarin. During the campaign, 96,246 gallons of the nerve agent were incinerated.

The facility is now preparing to destroy M55 rockets filled with VX nerve agent, according to the release. Following a 17-week conversion process, the facility is due to undergo a shakedown period of up to 720 hours. A trial burn would then be conducted to ensure worker competency and that the process meets state and federal requirements (U.S. Army Chemical Materials Agency release, March 2).
