U.S. Says No Early Incentives for North Korea

U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill said today that Washington would not offer incentives to North Korea to persuade it to rejoin the stalled nuclear negotiations, Agence France-Presse reported (see GSN, May 23).

“I think the six-party agreement is in the interests of all of us but certainly in the interests of them and I hope they will see their way to attending,” said Hill, lead U.S. envoy to the talks.

“So I think we need to be patient but also be firm that it’s not for us to provide incentives to the North Koreans to come back and do something that should be in their interests to do,” he said (Agence France-Presse/Yahoo!News, May 24).
