U.S. Orders 5 Million Doses of Anthrax Vaccine

The U.S. government has ordered another 5 million doses of anthrax vaccine from a Michigan company, the Associated Press reported Friday (see GSN, April 11).

BioPort Corp. will be paid $120 million for further production of Anthrax Vaccine Adsorbed. The company in February finished filling the first order of 5 million doses of the vaccine.

Delivery of the new doses is expected to begin soon, AP reported (Ken Thomas, Associated Press/Yahoo!News, May 5).

“We are committed to protecting the nation from the consequences of an anthrax attack,” Stewart Simonson, assistant secretary for public health emergency preparedness at the Health and Human Services Department, said in a press release. “The additional BioPort vaccine will further strengthen and expand the Strategic National Stockpile’s medical countermeasures for anthrax.”

The new order is funded through Project Bioshield, and modifies the original contract with BioPort from May 2005, the department said (U.S. Health and Human Services Department release, May 5).
