U.S. Extends Sanctions on Syria From Tuesday, May 9, 2006 issue.

U.S. Extends Sanctions on Syria

U.S. President George W. Bush yesterday extended sanctions against Syria for another year, Agence France-Presse reported (see GSN, May 6, 2005).

Sanctions have been in place since May 11, 2004. Bush’s executive order extends the prohibition of U.S. exports of military equipment and other items to Syria, and maintains the freeze on accounts of Syrian nationals who support terrorist groups.

The White House announced in a statement that Bush renewed the sanctions because of the threat posed by Damascus “in supporting terrorism, interfering in Lebanon, pursuing weapons of mass destruction and missile programs, and undermining United States and international efforts with respect to the stabilization and reconstruction of Iraq” (Agence France-Presse/Khaleej Times, May 9).
