U.S. Rejects Objections to Space Weapons From Wednesday, June 14, 2006 issue.

U.S. Rejects Objections to Space Weapons

A U.S. State Department official today reasserted U.S. rights to develop space-based weapons, rejecting efforts by China and Russia to prevent development of such armaments, ISN Security Watch reported (see GSN, June 9).

Space weapons would help safeguard military and commercial satellites, John Mohanco, State Department deputy director for multilateral, nuclear and security affairs, said in Geneva at the Conference on Disarmament. He added that Washington would oppose international efforts that would restrict its plans.

The 40-year-old prohibition against space-based weapons of mass destruction is sufficient, Mohanco said.

“As long as the potential for such attacks remains, our government will continue to consider the possible role that space-related weapons may play in protecting our assets,” he said. “For our part, the United States does not have any weapons in space, nor do we have plans to build such weapons.”

Washington is scheduled this month to announce a new space policy (ISN Security Watch, June 14).
