Chinese, U.S. Firms Faulted for Sales to Iran

The U.S. Treasury Department yesterday sanctioned four Chinese companies and one U.S. firm for providing parts for Iran’s missile program, the State Department announced (see GSN, April 20).

The Chinese companies are Beijing Alite Technologies Co. Ltd.; LIMMT Economic and Trade Co. Ltd.; China Great Wall Industry Corp. and China National Precision Machinery Import/Export Corp. The Treasury Department also identified the U.S. representative of China Great Wall Industry Corp. — G.W. Aerospace Inc. — among the proliferators.

The parts and technology transferred to Tehran are used for missiles capable of carrying chemical warheads, according to the State Department.

The companies were designated under Executive Order 13382, which bars transactions between identified companies and U.S. citizens, and freezes any of the firms’ assets that are within U.S. jurisdiction.

“Governments worldwide are urged to take appropriate measures to ensure that their companies and financial institutions are not facilitating Iran’s proliferation activities,” Stuart Levey, treasury undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, said in a press statement (U.S. State Department release, June 13).

“The Chinese firms have provided, or attempted to provide, financial, material, technological or other support for, or goods or services in support of” Iranian missile programs that are capable of delivering weapons of mass destruction, the statement adds.

Among the weapons developed with the illicit components are the Fateh 110 missile, which can fly 200 kilometers, and the Fajr rocket systems, a series with ranges of between 40 and 100 kilometers, Agence France-Presse reported (Agence France-Presse/Yahoo!News, June 13).
