U.S. Not Concerned by Planned Indian Missile Test From Tuesday, June 6, 2006 issue.

U.S. Not Concerned by Planned Indian Missile Test

U.S. Gen. Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said yesterday that Washington did not push India to suspend a planned test of its long-range, nuclear-capable Agni 3 missile, Agence France-Presse reported (see GSN, May 16).

“India is a sovereign nation and it will decide what weapons it will test or not test. Nations in the region have tested various weapons and missiles tests do not destabilize countries of the region,” he said while in New Delhi (Agence France-Presse/Yahoo!News, June 5).

“Many countries in this region have tested missiles and, as long as the weapons being tested are of defensive capability, we do not view it as [a] destabilizing factor,” he said, according to the Press Trust of India.

“If countries feel more relaxed about perceived threats through assurance of their defense capabilities, it will lead to [an] increase in stability in the region,” Pace said.

Pace also said the United States had briefed India briefings on the Patriot missile system and that it was awaiting New Delhi’s decision on a possible purchase (Press Trust of India/OutlookIndia.com, June 5).
