U.S. to Sell Nine SM-3 Interceptors to Japan

The U.S. Defense Department plans to sell nine Standard Missile 3 interceptors to Japan, Agence France-Presse reported today (see GSN, May 9).

“The proposed sale of the SM-3 missiles and [ballistic missile defense] upgrades ... will not significantly alter the existing military balance in the region as the proposed sale enhances only defensive capabilities,” the Pentagon said.

U.S. lawmakers must approve the $458 million deal (Agence France-Presse/Yahoo!News, June 7).
