Leaking Mustard Container Found at Umatilla Depot

Workers conducting routine monitoring yesterday found mustard agent vapor leaking from a storage container at the Umatilla Chemical Depot in Oregon, the U.S. Army Chemical Materials Agency said in a press release (see GSN, July 7).

A passive filter system prevented any vapor from escaping the storage igloo. The depot afterward installed a powered filter system to provide added safety.

The incident posed no danger to the public or environment, the agency said (U.S. Army Chemical Materials Agency release, July 21).
