South Korea Opposes Further Sanctions on Pyongyang From Friday, July 21, 2006 issue.

South Korea Opposes Further Sanctions on Pyongyang

South Korea would not support further U.S. sanctions against North Korea as retaliation for Pyongyang’s missile tests earlier this month, a senior official in Seoul said today (see GSN, July 18).

“The sanction provided by the U.N. resolution clearly (or only) covers dealings that are related to missiles and weapons of mass destruction,” said Unification Minister Lee Jong-seok. “In other words, economic dealings with the North in general are not subject to the U.N. resolution.”

He said earlier that it would be “inappropriate” to inflict economic sanctions against Pyongyang.

“I believe any move to resolve this (missile) issue through pressure and sanctions alone would not be appropriate,” Lee said yesterday (Yonhap News Agency, July 21).

Japan requested that Seoul scrutinize exports to North Korea, as Tokyo pushes the North discontinue missile tests and resume nuclear disarmament talks, the Associated Press reported today (see GSN, July 5).

Head South Korean nuclear negotiator Chun Young-woo did not disclose his response. He said the meetings focused on the U.N. Security Council resolution, which would bar missile-technology trade with Pyongyang.

“We held deep discussions on how to resume the six-way talks,” said Chun said after meeting with Japanese nuclear envoy Kenichiro Sasae (Kwang-Tae Kim, Associated Press, July 21).
