Russia Conducts Submarine Missile Test

Russia has recently flight-tested a submarine-launched ballistic missile, RIA Novosti reported Friday (see GSN, Dec. 21, 2005).

The submarine Tula conducted the test, and “the warhead of the missile arrived on the Kura testing range on Kamchatka accurately and in due time,” said navy spokesman Igor Dygalo (RIA Novosti/Defense and Security, July 3).

The Tula is a Delta IV-class submarine that has recently returned to sea after being overhauled, according to the Russian Strategic Nuclear Forces blog. The boat may not formally return to service, however, until it receives a batch of new missiles, R-29RM Sinevas, which have been slow in production, according to the blog (Russian Strategic Forces blog, Jan. 12).
