Tokyo Sarin Attack Conspirator Loses Appeal From Friday, August 18, 2006 issue.

Tokyo Sarin Attack Conspirator Loses Appeal

A chemist sentenced to death for producing the sarin gas used in the 1995 Tokyo subway attack that killed 12 people and injured thousands today lost an appeal to the Tokyo High Court, Agence France-Presse reported (see GSN, Nov. 30).

Masami Tsuchiya led the chemical unit of the Aum Supreme Truth cult and conspired with cult leader Shoko Asahara, who has also been sentenced to death, to carry out deadly attacks in Japan. Tsuchiya also was found guilty of producing the nerve gas that killed seven people in 1994 in the city of Matsumoto, according to AFP.

“Using his knowledge as the top chemist of the cult, he played central roles in a series of crimes,” said Judge Yu Shiraki, upholding the 2004 Tokyo District Court ruling.

“He knew (cult members) were going to use sarin for random killing,” Shiraki said.

“The crimes were vicious and cannot be tolerated, as they were carried out by the cult that was led by Asahara and believed in self-righteous dogma,” he said. “Without defendant Tsuchiya’s involvement, the random and massive killing could not have taken place” (Agence France-Presse/Yahoo!News, Aug. 18).
