North Korean Missile Bases Could Target U.S. Forces From Thursday, August 3, 2006 issue.

North Korean Missile Bases Could Target U.S. Forces

A South Korean think tank has judged that new North Korean bases could be equipped with ballistic missiles aimed at Japan and U.S. military forces on the island nation, the Associated Press reported today (see GSN, Aug. 2).

“New underground missile bases have been built or are under construction around the border with China and along the east coast,” according to a report from the South Korean Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security. Those “on the east coast could be seen as bases for medium- or long-range missiles targeting Japan and U.S. military bases in Japan.”

The July 26 report identifies Taepodong 2 and SSN 6 missiles as those that could be installed at the bases, according to AP. Both are believed to have a range of up to 2,500 miles.

Pyongyang is also believed to have used Chinese design and technology obtained through Iran to develop the Taepodong 2, the report states.

North Korea also garners $150 million annually from missile exports. Customers include Egypt, Iran, Libya, Syria and Yemen, according to the report.

“North Korea is at the center of global ballistic missile proliferation,” it says (Jae Soon-Chang, Associated Press/Khaleej Times, Aug. 3).
