U.S. Sanctions Seven Firms for Iran Dealings

The United States has sanctioned seven non-U.S. firms over their alleged sales of WMD-related technology to Iran, the Associated Press reported Friday (see GSN, July 28).

The companies — one from Cuba, and two each from India, North Korea and Russia — are believed to have violated the Iran Nonproliferation Act of 2000.  They are now barred from doing business with the U.S. government.

Moscow called the action against Rosoboronexport, an official state arms exporter, and Sukhoi, a fighter-jet maker, a “political and legal anachronism.”  The Russian Foreign Ministry said the country’s firms act in “strict conformity with the norms of international law and Russian legislation.”

The sanctioned Indian companies are chemical producers Balaji Amines Ltd. and Prachi Poly Products Ltd. The North Korean entities are Korean Mining and Industrial Development Corp. and Korea Pugang Trading Corp. The Cuban company is the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, AP reported (George Gedda, Associated Press/Washington Post, Aug. 4).
