Azores to Host Nuclear Monitoring Station From Tuesday, August 8, 2006 issue.

Azores to Host Nuclear Monitoring Station

Flores island in Portugal’s Azores archipelago has been chosen as the site of another nuclear monitoring station in a network of more than 300 facilities used to monitor the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, Agence France-Presse reported yesterday (see GSN, July 18).

The CTBT Organization chose Flores for its plains and abundant vegetation, which can shield sensitive equipment, island science foundation chief Joao Gaspar told the Lusa news agency.

The station is scheduled to be built next year, according to AFP (Agence France-Presse, Aug. 7).
