No Sign Iran Will Heed U.N. Demands, U.S. Says

Iran has not offered any sign that it plans to heed a U.N. Security Council resolution demanding suspension of its uranium enrichment work, the U.S. State Department said yesterday (see GSN, Aug. 8).

“There have been a variety of public statements from the Iranians, but we haven’t seen any evidence yet that they are complying with the demand and requirement of the international community,” said department spokesman Sean McCormack, according to the Associated Press.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice plans to discuss the standoff with other foreign ministers at the United Nations this week, McCormack added (Barry Schweid, Associated Press/Washington Post, Aug. 9).

U.S. Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman said yesterday that ending Tehran’s controversial nuclear activities must take priority over the price of oil, Reuters reported.

“We are as prepared as we can be” for a disruption of Iran’s oil exports, he said. “As important as the price of oil is, (stopping Iranian nuclear enrichment is) more important than the price of oil” (Reuters/Yahoo!News, Aug. 9).

Meanwhile, Russian Federal Atomic Energy Agency chief Sergei Kiriyenko said Iran was prepared to begin detailed talks on Moscow’s proposal to conduct uranium enrichment on its behalf in Russia, Kommersant reported today.

“Iran’s position is as follows: They find our proposal extremely interesting and are ready to proceed to detailed discussion,” he said. “We are ready completely as well, up to having prepared the shops. Iranian partners will arrive in one of these days, and negotiations are constantly under way” (Kommersant, Aug. 9).
