Los Alamos, Private Firm Develop Radiation Detectors

The Los Alamos National Laboratory and a private firm have teamed up to develop a new radiation detector, the Santa Fe New Mexican reported yesterday (see GSN, March 6).

Plans call improving an existing hand-held device and developing a bench-top detector that can work without an operator.  Both designs would be sold on the open market, according to the New Mexican.

“We've got a project plan in place for a two-year completion date, said Los Alamos researcher Matt Newell.  “The first year, we should have the hand-held unit commercialized, and the second year, we'll be working on the unattended instrument.”

Both machines would be built to standards established by the International Atomic Energy Agency (Andy Lenderman, The New Mexican, March 18).
